Man’s gun accidentally fires, hitting neighbor

-Alvert O’Neal Jr., 45, has been charged with third-degree assault and reckless endangering after his handgun allegedly discharged earlier Sunday.
-The shot fired sent a bullet through the wall of his north Portland apartment and into a nearby home striking the female victim in the shoulder while she was sleeping.
-The 46-year-old victim was treated in the Legacy Emanuel Hospital for non life threatening injuries. Police did not disclose her name.

-Police only became aware of the shooting after responding to the hospital to speak to the injured lady. They contacted her neighbor at his apartment in the 8600 block of North Columbia Boulevard, and he agreed to cooperate with investigators.

-Apparently Alvert had thrown his .380-caliber semi automatic handgun on his bed, causing it to discharge.
-He claims he believed the gun was unloaded at the time, police said.
